Yemen: Prime Minister Salem bin Breik resigns; Shaya Mohsen Zindani named as replacement

Yemen Prime minister Salem bin Breik resigned

Yemen’s Prime Minister Salem bin Breik gave his resignation on Thursday. The country’s Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council accepted his resignation and appointed foreign minister Shaya Mohsen Zindani as the new prime minister, as reported by Reuters citing state news agency Saba.Bin Breik formally tendered his resignation, which the council approved, after which Zindani was appointed to form a new cabinet, Saba reported. The leadership change comes at a time of heightened tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates over developments in Yemen. In December, the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council seized control of large parts of southern and eastern Yemen, advancing close to the Saudi border, a move Riyadh viewed as a threat to its national security. Saudi-backed forces have since largely retaken those areas. Relations between the two Gulf powers have also been strained by broader disagreements, including over geopolitics and oil output. Saudi Arabia and the UAE had previously cooperated as part of a coalition fighting the Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen’s civil war, a conflict that has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
