This 1978 Kawasaki KZ1000 Z1-R was purchased new by the seller’s brother and acquired by the seller in 1996. Power is from an air-cooled 1,015cc DOHC inline-four that has been modified with a Dyna electronic ignition system, 29mm Mikuni smoothbore carburetors, Andrews 2X cams and springs, and a Bassani Superbike four-into-one exhaust system. Shifting is via a five-speed transmission, and the bike rides on EPM 18″ alloy wheels. It is further equipped with S&W Street Stroker shocks, a modified fork, and triple disc brakes with cross-drilled rotors. The double-cradle frame has been refinished in black and modified with strengthened engine mounts and swingarm pivots, and the bodywork is finished in metallic light blue with black and blue pinstripes. This Z1-R is now offered with a tool kit, an owner’s manual, and a clean Missouri title in the seller’s name.
The fiberglass quarter-fairing, steel 3.4-gallon fuel tank, front fender, tail section, and side covers are finished in metallic light blue with black and blue pinstripes. The bodywork is fitted over a double-cradle frame that has been refinished in black and modified with strengthened engine mounts and swingarm pivots. The turn signals have been removed, but the bike retains the wiring and switchgear to add replacements.
Wider than stock EPM 18″ alloy wheels are mounted with 100/90 front and 120/90 rear Pirelli Sport Demon tires. The fork has been modified with heavier springs, low-stiction seals, and replacement dampening rods with 1″ of additional travel. S&W Street Stroker gas shocks are mounted to a gusseted swing arm, and braking is handled by triple disc brakes with cross-drilled and polished rotors. Recent work includes rebuilding the brakes with stainless-steel caliper pistons and brake lines.
The chrome-finished handlebar carries a pair of mirrors and fronts a dash panel housing a 160-mph Nippon Denso speedometer and a matching tachometer with an 8,500-rpm redline as well as a fuel-level gauge, an ammeter, and a vertical bank of indicator lights. The five-digit odometer shows 6k miles, 2k of which were ridden by the seller.
The air-cooled 1,015cc DOHC inline-four features a quartet of 29mm Mikuni smoothbore carburetors and an electric starter. Modifications include Andrews 2X cams and springs, Dyna electronic ignition, an AGM battery, Barnett clutch plates and springs, and a Bassani Superbike four-into-one exhaust system. Recent work included adjusting the valves, rebuilding the carburetors, and changing the oil and filter.
Power is sent to the rear wheel through a five-speed transmission and a drive chain.
