No Reserve: 1973 Pontiac Grand Am Project for sale on BaT Auctions – ending April 29 (Lot #189,431)

This 1973 Pontiac Grand Am Sport Coupe is said to have remained with its original owner in Pembroke, Ontario, until it was purchased by the seller’s late father in 2002. Subsequent refurbishment work reportedly included the installation of replacement fenders as well as bodywork, a repaint in white, a rebuild of the 400ci V8, and retrimming the front bucket seats in burgundy vinyl. Equipment includes a three-speed automatic transmission, a dual exhaust system, power steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, American Racing Torq Thrust wheels, front bucket seats, and an AM radio. The car is described as a running project by the seller, who notes that the rear frame will need to be repaired, and a replacement radiator and fuel lines will need to be sourced and installed prior to use. This first-year Grand Am project is now offered by the seller on behalf of his father’s estate at no reserve in Canada with original purchase documents, factory literature, service records, spare trim pieces, and an Ontario registration document in the seller’s father’s name.

Sharing its platform with the Pontiac LeMans, the Grand Am was introduced for the 1973 model year and was marketed as a sportier alternative to the Grand Prix personal luxury coupe. Available in both sedan and coupe variants, the Grand Am featured Colonnade bodywork with an Endura urethane front fascia, while coupes received louvered quarter windows as well. A total of 34,445 coupes were produced for the model year. The seller tells us that this example was fitted with replacement fenders and received bodywork under their father’s ownership before it was sandblasted and repainted in white. Additional equipment includes red and blue accent stripes, body-color side mirror caps, and tinted windows. A collection of spare badges and trim pieces are included in the sale and can be seen in the gallery.

The American Racing Torq Thrust wheels are mounted with Hercules MRX Plus radial tires. A steel spare wheel is stowed in the trunk. The Grand Am featured Pontiac’s Radial Tuned suspension that incorporated front and rear stabilizer bars as well as Delco Pliacell shock absorbers. Power steering and power-assisted front discs were also standard equipment.

The cabin features front bucket seats that were re-trimmed in burgundy vinyl during the refurbishment. Color-coordinated upholstery extends to the rear bench seat, center console, dashboard, and door panels, while matching carpets line the floors. Additional equipment includes woodgrain interior trim, a center console, a heater, and an AM radio. A replacement heater core was installed. The center console trim is worn, and the seller notes cracks on various interior trim pieces.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer, a clock, and gauges for fuel level, voltage, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 38k miles, and is said to have rolled over once. The seller estimates that 12k miles were added under current ownership.

The 400ci V8 is equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and was factory rated at 230 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The engine is said to have been rebuilt during the refurbishment commissioned by the seller’s father, and the carburetor and distributor were serviced in September 2024. The seller notes that a replacement radiator will need to be installed prior to use.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. The transmission parking pawl was replaced in September 2024, and replacement mufflers were installed under the seller’s father’s ownership. The seller notes that the rear of the frame will require rust repairs and tells us that replacement fuel lines will need to be sourced and installed prior to use.
